MASTERS SWIMMING
The Gympie Gold Fins Swimming Club now includes Gympie Gold Fins Masters Swimming to help serve the community that has so generously supported us for many years.
We have identified a number of questions that are often asked about Masters Swimming, and we hope they help you to decide if Masters Swimming is for you.
Do you enjoy swimming and are over the age of 18?
If you answered YES, why not consider joining the Gympie Gold Fins Masters?
What is Masters Swimming all about?
Masters Swimming is all about promoting a fit and healthy lifestyle in a fun and supportive way.
Don’t be intimidated or put off by the term “Masters”. You don’t have to be an expert or a “superstar” swimmer, just somebody who likes to use swimming as a way of getting and/or maintaining their fitness.
It is not all about competition, although there is that opportunity if you want it. It is what you want to make of it and achieve what YOU want. Set yourself a goal and go for it.
I’m not sure I’m fast enough!
It doesn’t matter how fast or fit you are. Take the plunge (excuse the pun) to improve your fitness and overall good health.
Do I have to compete at swimming meets?
Absolutely not!
Many swimmers join a masters club for health and fitness reasons and have other swimmers to “train” with to stay motivated.
There are a few popular non-competitive programs you can take part in to challenge yourself, but these are definitely not compulsory.
There are of course competitions if you do wish to take part in. These will be added to the EVENTS section of our web page.
Is there a “Club Night” for Masters?
At this stage, there will not be a separate “Club Night” for Masters. You are however encouraged to come to a Gympie Gold Fins club night which is generally 6:00pm on a Friday night at the ARC. For Masters swimmers wishing to swim, “just turn up” and we will add you in.
Do I have to join the Gympie Gold Fins Swimming Club to be a member of Gympie Gold Fins Masters Swimming?
No you don’t.
The Gympie Gold Fins Swimming Club is registered with Swimming Australia, Swimming Queensland and Wide Bay Regional Swimming.
While being a part of the Gympie Gold Fins Swimming Club, the Gympie Gold Fins Masters Swimming, is registered with Masters Swimming Australia and Masters Swimming Queensland through what is call a “One Club” process.
Some competitive Masters swimmers will join both so that they can compete at Swimming Australia, Swimming Queensland and/or Wide Bay Swimming sanctioned events.
Very simply put, if you only join the Gympie Gold Fins Masters, you may only compete at Masters swim meets if you wish to. If you wish to compete at any Swimming Queensland sanctioned meet, eg our own Gympie Gold Rush Meet, you must join the Gympie Gold Fins swimming Club as well (2 separate registrations) as there are insurance implications etc.
Membership and fees can be found on the Membership and Fees section of the website under the About Us menu item. There is a discount if you do join both.
Who can join?
Membership is open to people who are 18 years or are older. An individual who has attained the age of 18 can join a Masters Club to train and compete in club, branch and National Masters events. FINA still retains its minimum age for competing at 25 years though.
You can travel the world as an Australian Masters swimmer and train with any Masters club.
If I join Masters, do I have to join a training squad?
No you don’t.
There are many options and training/coaching depends on your ability level and the time you have available. Most members choose to “self-train” due to work and others form a little social lap group etc.
There are various swim squads and stroke correction classes available at the Gympie ARC if you are interested. Contact them to find out more details on these.
